When Dakshya insulted Shiva, Sati was overcome with rage. To renounce her worldly body, Sati, channelised her inner light to grow and set herself ablaze, as a sign of protest against her father’s actions.

Sati’s loss and separation filled Shiva with immense rage and anguish. Carrying Sati’s body, Shiva began the Rudra Tandav (dance of destruction) and his inconsolable grief and anger threatened to destroy the world.

Vishnu, to save the universe and restore Shiva’s sanity, rid Shiva of Sati’s lifeless body. With his Sudarshan Chakra, he shattered it into 51 pieces. Each fell across India, forming the Shakti Peethas. Her right foot’s toe fell to where the Kalighat temple now stands.

Thus the Kalighat art form was born on the banks of Hooghly River in 19th century West Bengal. The local artisans or Patuas in Bengal detailed out the images in the artwork, while the background remained non-essential. Traditionally, the chief patua inked in the outline with bold strokes while other family members filled in the colours.

Over time, an occidental style emerged as the art of revolution which depicted leaders from the freedom struggle under the Briitish Raj as well as social evils. The art form, which is so intricately tied to Sati’s legend, also depicted themes like the changing station of women and people resistant to these changes were portrayed in subordinate positions to them.

With every art piece you hang, meals are gifted to someone in need. Because the best kind of art, feeds more than just your walls.
